The city also played an important role in American immigration history when thousands of immigrants arrived in Galveston during the 19th century. Many were fleeing religious persecution or political turmoil at home and were looking for a new life in America. Most came from Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Czechoslovakia during this period.
