Shield Park
Shield Park
33rd Street and the post office were once the heart of Galveston's Cotton Storage and Industrial District. Galveston was the first city in Texas to have many utilities like running water and gas-powered lights. The Galveston Gasworks, located at 33rd and Market Street, was established in 1860 and remained operational until 1955. It was one of the first gas storage and distribution plants in Texas. The Gas Works played an essential role in the economic development of Galveston, providing gas for lighting and heating to businesses and homes. As the city of Galveston's population grew in the late 18 hundreds, the Gas Works storage tanks were constructed across Post Office Street at the location of Modern Day Shield Park during the 1900 Storm; the Gas Works facility was ravaged and all but destroyed by the storm, including the storage tanks at Shield Park's current location. The site underwent several cleanup and redevelopment efforts through the next century and is now home to a mixed-use development. Once part of Galveston's Industrial District and a section of a gas plant, this area was transitioned into a city park. The Galveston Industrial Commission, better Parks for Galveston, and Galveston are collaborating to transform Shield Park into a thriving urban green space.
