WHEN AND IF
When And If
Built in 1939, she has a length of 80 feet, a sail area of 2,400 square feet, and a hull made of wood.
She was commissioned by General George S. Patton while he was serving during world war II. This boat is unique in that it was designed to be both beautiful and classic in appearance. Yet sturdy and luxurious enough for taking a family on a voyage.
The name "When And If" comes from General George S. Patton; he was known to say that when the war was over and if he survived it, he would sail around the world on this vessel. Patton commissioned John Alden, one of America's most renowned Naval architects, to design the vessel, and no expense was spared as Alden wanted to create a yacht that exuded both luxury and strength. The vessel was completed in time for Patton's return from the war, yet, he would never get the chance to make his dream a reality as s his sudden death in 1945 left the When And If in her original location. For the years that followed, the When And If remained in the family.
In 1972, the vessel was donated to the landmark school, where it was utilized as a youth training vessel sailing between Maine and Massachusetts.
The When and If was heavily damaged during the storm in 1992. It was salvaged and restored by and eventually found her way into the classic yacht chartering world. She has sailed throughout the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and all over New England and been part of numerous prestigious races. She has even been featured on the Amazon prime show Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
The When And If sails today as a classic restored vessel telling the story of General Patton and all of those who dream of sailing around the world.
